When the trip to Zermatt is easiest
On a weekday and in the quieter weeks the village has air. The other days stay in Leukerbad.

The best Zermatt day is the one when the village has air. You go on a weekday, in late spring or early autumn, and in the evening you are back in Leukerbad. The Gemmi-Bahnen gondola is a reminder of where the day starts and ends: five minutes from the apartment, and the valley lies below.
When the village has room
In late spring and early autumn the lane is calmer. Walks with children get shorter, you wait less at the railway, and a pause is really a pause. On a weekday it is the same: fewer day visitors, more space in the street, more quiet for younger children.

That is what a calm stop looks like. A family by the lake, the mountain behind, and nobody has to hurry for the next train. You stay while it is good, and you go back when the little ones have had enough.

In autumn the train runs through yellow larches, and the Matterhorn has a cloud on the summit. That is a good day for exactly one ride. Then the village, or straight on the way home.
The full weeks, and the days between
In the school holidays, on a sunny summer weekend and in the full winter season the village is lively. Many people, full trains, and the pause wants a little planning. Then you put the outing on a weekday beside it, and you spend the full days where you can turn round on foot.

A coffee looking at the gondolas is that kind of stop when you are up. The cup, the valley under the cloud, the red cabins. After that the day is full enough.
The quiet days belong to Leukerbad

The Daubensee is that kind of day without Zermatt. A lake between scree slopes, a gravel path, a few walkers, and you turn round when the legs want to. The Gemmi cable car is five minutes from the apartment. The baths are ten minutes on foot, and so are the playground and the stream in the village.
From Alpine Siesta a week splits like this: one day for the Matterhorn, the others for the valley.
