Varen, wine in a quiet village
Small plots, a church, paths through the vines. In the evening you drink in Leukerbad.

Varen sits above the Rhône valley. The vines stand in small plots, the village is easy to take in, and you can leave with a bottle without pushing through a crowd. In the evening you are in Leukerbad, and the wine from Varen is on the table.
Slopes that taste of autumn
The south-facing slopes are sunny, the climate is dry, the estates are small. At a tasting someone talks about the wine. You stay as long as it is still easy for the children.

From above you see the roofs, the pale church tower, vines between them and a green playing field. The village is small enough that a walk through the lanes can be the whole morning.

In the vineyard the dark grapes hang right in front of the tower. You walk a little way up the slope and you are soon back among the houses. The wines from here are clear whites and sturdy reds, often in small quantities.
On foot, and then the evening

A gravel path between yellow vines, the mountain on one side. Four people, enough space, no programme. With children the same path stays shorter: to the next bend, then back to the village.
Little traffic, a lot of quiet. The wine is often opened later, on purpose, at your own table.

In Alpine Siesta the fire is on, the cheese is on the plate, the children are next door. Check-in from 15:00, the thermal baths a ten-minute walk.
