Winter with children in Leukerbad, without skiing every day
Snow, the sports arena and short walks from the apartment. Not every winter day has to be a piste.

Winter with children in Leukerbad does not have to be hard work. The village is at the end of the valley, the walks are short, and you can stop a day in the snow without looking for a car. This page is how winter looks from our place: piste, a walk, the sports arena, and the days you simply go back inside.

Not every winter day is a ski day
In the Valais, winter is more than the piste. Families notice that the moment someone is tired and the rest of the day is still long. With us there are three kinds of day, and all three are winter: a few runs and then stop, a walk in the snow even if it is only half an hour, or warmth, the baths or the hall, when outside is finished.
A wide piste, a line of peaks, and afterwards you are back in the apartment on foot or with a short bus. In Leukerbad that is the point: the way back is short.
A walk, without turning it into a tour
A winter walk does not need a destination. A firm path, snow to touch, and permission to turn round. With a pushchair only while the path is solid. Whether a particular path was cleared that morning, you see outside.
The Römerweg, the walk to the Weidstübli, the Daubensee and the Lomperaweg are walks in the region. You go a little way and turn round when it is enough.
The wooden bridge is that kind of path: short, clear, and the rock face is the point, not a summit cross. If the wind turns or someone has wet gloves, that is already the whole outing.
The sports arena, when the day should stay small
The Leukerbad sports arena is the place for a first meeting with skis, without a whole ski area. In the photo the child wears a vest that says Sportarena and stands between cones. That is a practice slope, not a race.

Check-in is from 15:00. Do not plan arrival day as a ski day. On the day you leave, 11:00 is the end, so no cable car that morning. One outdoor parking space comes with the apartment. You do not need it for these walks.
With a baby, winter is a short walk and a warm pause. With small children, a sledge and snow, not a full ski day. With older children the day can be longer. It does not have to be. Three rooms mean the living room is quiet again in the evening. In the morning you decide at the door. The bakery is two minutes away. After skiing, one block, then food. The baths are the ending, ten minutes on foot, not a third programme. Wet jackets go on the balcony. The rock face is there from the village. The day looks like Leukerbad even when you stay below.
